Square surimono. Fine impression with metallic printing. Fine colour. Very good condition. Forrer, Surimono, Rijskmuseum, Amsterdam, no. 455. According to Forrer, the gold bands with the black border suggest that the male dancers are caught in a bird cage.

Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891)- A Moonflower (Yugao) on a Fan. Circa 1860's.
Surimono. 19.2 x 26 cm. Fine impression, colour and condition. This unusual print appears to be an announcement requesting images for a Kyogakai, a social gathering where a group of people would draw images to represent a particular theme.The characters read Tsuizen Kyoga awase (A Commemorative kyoga picture-matching game). It appears that images from the Tale of Genji are being requested—the flower on the fan is yugao, one of the chapters of the novel. Surimono.

Large surimono. 43.4 x 57.5 cm. Gerstle, Kabuki Heroes on the Osaka Stage, British Museum, 231b; Keyes, Ainsworth Collection, Oberlin, no. 141. Fine impression with embossing. Fine colour. Very good condition with the usual folds. This is one half of an impressive surimono diptych commemorating the retirement of Nakamura Utaemon III.
