For two other examples, see: Sadamura, Kyosai: The Israel Goldman Collection, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2022, nos. 75 and 76. As Sadamura Koto notes: ‘The subject is related to the artist’s own experience and can be read as an acerbic commentary on the critics and judges at the competitive exhibitions frequently organized by the Meiji government’ (op. cit. page 160).

    Active in the late 18 th and early 19 th centuries which include a number of Okyo pupils. Ink and colour on silk.These high-quality album paintings in unusually large format (32.4 x 45cm) seem to have been bound together by Maruyama Osho (1904-1981) in 1923. Osho was an artist and connoisseur who was acknowledged as a specialist in judging Maruyama-Shijo school paintings.

    Hanging scroll. Ink and colour on paper. 103.5 x 32 cm. Signed: Seisei Kyosai. Sealed: Kyosai in. The oni wears a Buddhist vestment and has a kane (gong) hung on his chest. He holds a hogacho (notebook with list of pledged contributions) in one hand with a shumoku (wooden bell hammer) in the other. It was believed that hanging this type of image in an infant's room at night would prevent the baby from crying.
